It's time for...

January 31, 2012
I'll be MIA for about a week as I make some changes to the blog ~ my techie & graphic design friends are helping me tweak this site so that it functions better and looks fresher :) I have a couple of posts scheduled in between but this poor little thing needs some TLC! Watch this space...

Manic Monday: Brain Drain

January 30, 2012
Left Brain
I am the left brain. I am a scientist. A mathmetician. I love the familiar. I categorize. I am accurate. Linear. Analytical. Strategic. I am practical. Always in control. A master of words and language. Realistic. I calculate equations and play with numbers. I am order. I am logic. I know exactly who I am.

Right Brain:
I am the right brain. I am creativity. A free spirit. I am passion. Yearning. Sensuality. I am the sound of roaring laughter. I am taste. The feeling of sand between bare feet. I am movement. Vivid colours. I am the urge to paint on an empty canvas. I am boundless imagination. Art. Poetry. I sense. I feel. I am everything I wanted to be.

This makes the Lefties seem quite boring but even though most of us can relate to a little bit from both sides we're either more of a 'leftie' or a 'rightie'.
My classmates and I (mostly 'lefties' except for the Germans) have been mentioning this concept quite a lot this past month as we struggle through yet another statistics course. The general consensus is: Who was I kidding when I decided to do a Masters of Science? My functioning Right side has begun to melt...

This blog needs YOU

January 29, 2012

It's proving very difficult to have a life, job, courswork and a decent blog - that is, unless you're lucky enough to combine two or more of those elements. Blogging for money has never appealed to me personally, I think it takes the fun out of things and I want to be able to blog about whatever I like. Recently however, I've been in touch with some travel, lifestyle and photography websites & companies who have offered a few alternatives such as free travel in exchange for reviews, product testing and books (free books!) amongst other fun stuff. Companies that offer these freebies consider various things before they take on a pipsqueak blogger; namely content, audience and style. Luckily, I ramble on about so many different things that my options are open for sponsorship but I need YOU dear reader to help me out. I've shown them the number of visits Skip to Malou* streams from FeedBurner, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Bloglovin' and the world wide web. Luckily, it's a lot more than the 180 followers I have on Google Friends Connect. Unfortunately, they take Google Followers quite seriously and I will be severly limited until I get my 'followers' up.
Since I've been such a naughty blogger and I've been posting endless amount of photos I didn't think to ask this of everyone (again)...

So I'm trying my luck today, please do me a favour...if you're reading this, ''follow" Skip to Malou* so I can do bigger and better things with this blog. And by 'following' you won't get annoying emails sent directly to your inbox or anything, you won't even know you're following. It's purely for online popularity purposes, to show that this geek has friends out there who care enough to sign up.

Top 10 Travel essentials

January 26, 2012
1. My Nikon D40x for photos and my Olympus Tough for video + underwater shots 2. A comfortable outfit consisting of black leggings, a loose nautical top, a warm pashmina and my favourite Ray Bans 3. A sturdy Kipling bag - built for life! 4. My crackberry for blogging and reassuring Mum 5. A travel journal 6. A good book - usually swapped with another traveller or bought in a charity shop 7. My ipod Pinkie 8. Never underestimate the power of a loud luggage tag! 9. The good ol' Longchamp bag - full of treasures.

 10. Great travel buddy

I'm teaming up with Friday's Fancies for the first time this week after a friend suggested I give it a go! I was worried I wouldn't be able to participate this week because I signed up rather late but then I saw the theme :
"Let's fly away!"
Luckily I had this recent post on my travel essentials so figured I wouldn't be cheating too much by using this post, right? Next week I'll be coming up with something new once I've finished tinkering with HTML and other yummy stuff and Skip to Malou* is fully functioning with a fresh, new look!

Have a great weekend - Especially to those lucky enough to actually fly away for a quick break! :)

Orange Babies

This ad has been running in Holland since the end of last year and I thought it was a pretty cool and straightforward way of bringing the message across. The main goal of Orange Babies is to help HIV infected women and their babies in Africa. Read more about the programme on their UK website.

For more on the fight against HIV/AIDS check out my post on Dance4Life.

Let's take a roadtrippppp

January 20, 2012

This time I'm heading to Denmark to visit a friend who lives in Aarhus, 4 hours North of Copenhagen. My partners in crime are two Dutchies and a Bajan: Dominique, Lisanne and Matthew!

Our bags are packed and we're ready to gooo and as usual I've compiled a roadtrip playlist to ensure a smooth 7 hour ride to the land of the vikings. Here's a random selection of songs to sing along to and wake us up when there's no more red bull:

1. Calvin Harris - So close
2. Bon Iver - Skinny love
3. N-Trance - Set you free
4. Pogo - UPular Remix
5. Sold my soul - Goldfish
6. Born to Be Wild- Steppenwolf

Fingers and toes crossed....

Bucket list

January 18, 2012
Every new year I make a mini list of places I'd like to (realistically) visit in the course of that year but a conversation with my friends got me thinking about posting a lifetime bucket list. Tasha over at Love Design* made her own list since then and some of our ideas are quite similar. Here is a random selection of a few things I'd like to do, places I'd like to go, people I'd like to meet, things I'd like to see in 2012 and beyond...

1. Go crazy with paint in an empty, white walled room

Flick it, smear it, throw it, spit it, roll in it, smudge it...get dirty with it. Similar to a 6th form assignment we had once with one of my favourite teachers Mrs.Spink; going crazy on a white sheet of canvas, blindfolded whilst listening to Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

2. Wingsuit flying

Call me crazy but this is on the top of my list of things to do before I die - unfortunately it requires the experience of at least 200 skydives so it looks like I'll ticking that box at age 75

3. Photograph the following:

4. Keep quiet for a week

Another 'call me crazy' idea considering I'm a chatterbox but visiting an Ashram in India is definitely on here.

5. Swim with sharks + my BFF Christina

I reckon she'd be a safe person to go with because she's a lot smaller than me and generally considered bite size.

6. Use my 21st birthday ticket and make a world trip

Pack a (small) bag and leave everything for a year with an open round-the-world ticket.

7. Start my own charity in Barbados
Aimed at helping children on the island

8. Have lunch with one (or all) of the following:

9. Fly a plane

Aviation runs in the family; my mum was a stewardess for many years and now runs an airline management company, my stepdad is a captain and one of my brothers has recently qualified as a pilot. Where does that leave me? In the back seat apparently! Flying sounds amazing and I'd love to give it a go.

10. Witness the birth of a baby

 12. Learn a third language

Preferably Chinese or Arabic but it also depends on where I end up living eventually - could be useful for avoiding situations like this again in Shanghai.

13. Complete the Dakar Challenge or a similar cross country rally

The ultimate roadtrip to somewhere like China or across South America

14. And, finally....Swim in a pool of cooked noodles

Inspired by this scene from "Patch Adams" - Just imagine! :)

I also asked friends what would be on their bucket list and these are some of their cool ideas:

-Drop a large stack of plates
- Have a Champagne bubble bath
-Wearing a diving mask and rubber overalls, join in a really messy food fight that involves yoghurt and lots of sauces
- Swimming with dolphins
- Surf in Hawaii
- Indulge in cakes from all over the world for one day
- Join a flash mob
- Eat in the most expensive restaurant in the world
- Live in a bubble under the sea
- Drive Route 66
- Become somewhat of a wine connoisseur
- Shave my head
- Pull the emergency lever on a train
-Scream at the top of my lungs in a church
- Dive into a frozen lake
- Spend the entire day naked
- Walk to the centre of a volcano crater
- Base jump (crazy brother)
- Get a tattoo (but don't tell mum)
- Swim the Dead Sea

What's on your bucket list?

Wednesday's Window to the World: Banff, Canada

This is the view through one of the portal windows in the eastern wing of the Banff Springs Hotel, in the Rocky Mountains. The hotel is a former railway hotel constructed in Scottish Baronial style in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. It was built in 1888 and is a popular tourist destination spot in Canada. It wasn't snowing when this photo was taken but a mist hung in the air, obscuring the view of the valley behind the hotel.

Who needs Photoshop anyway?

January 17, 2012
With regards to my previous post on photoshopping, this beautiful sunset couldn't have come at a better time! These photos have not been enhanced and were taken from my rooftop terrace, overlooking the Jordaan in Amsterdam yesterday evening. I was so blown away by the colours that I forgot how freezing it was; apparently I have a thing for sunsets and silhouettes.

Sunday Snapshot*

January 15, 2012

Today marked my first week back in the Dam and I feel like I never really left! It's been so nice catching up with friends, family and housemates (except for the psycho cat...more on her later) even though my course has been extremely demanding. This week was a blur of statistics, research design, coffee, partying and jet lag. I would have loved nothing more than to be at home, sailing and watching the sunset today.

Grammar, Grammar, Grammar!

January 12, 2012

Kids these days need a good whack across the arm with a ruler for using incorrect grammar. It's a pet peeve of mine to see people use everyday words and expressions incorrectly, far less to see incorrect spelling.
In the age of autocorrect and spellcheck, there is no excuse for these mistakes.

Let's go over the basics:

An apostrophe is never used to form a plural
'Literally' means it actually happened, not that it figuratively happened.
"Loose" and "lose" are two different words
"Your" and "you're" are two different words
"Their", "there" and "they're" are actually three different words
"Affect" is a verb. "Effect" is a noun.
"It's" is short for "it is" and "its" means "belonging to it"

naughty blogger

January 10, 2012
Oops...I've been a bad, bad blogger. Not a great way to start off a New Year's Resolution, is it? I had a chaotic final week at home, followed by a chaotic weekend of travelling (it took me over 24 hours to get to Amsterdam!), topped off by a chaotic first day back at school. The only thing that kept me from collapsing into a fit of tears at the end of my journey was my lovely housemate surprising me at the airport & making my 'welcome home' feel that much more special. So happy to be back & can't wait for what's ahead!

This whole 'photo a day' is proving quite difficult - not because I haven't been taking enough photos but rather too many! So I've decided to stick to a certain theme as of next week to be a bit more strict with myself. I also had a paroozle to see if which other bloggers decided to take on this loopy challenge and I found this great challenge calendar! Thanks Chantelle! :) I won't stick to this particular challenge day by day but it's a good guideline if I get stuck.

This is quite the tradition here in Barbados, these cute chattel houses are decorated like this for about a month during Christmas. Some are so beautiful that people stop to take photos and cause a line of traffic! (like me :))

January 2, 2012

Today we're touring the island dressed as silly tourists! This has become somewhat of an annual tradition with our group of friends and it's the perfect excuse to dress up, get lost on our little rock and have a great time!

A few amazing distractions

Here are a few of the things I'm blaming for my absence in the blogosphere and I'm pretty sure everyone would agree that they're not bad reasons...

1. My Best Friend's Wedding

Wedding on New Year's Eve? Yes please! Chantelle + Ray tied the knot in a fairytale wedding yesterday and I was lucky enough to be one of the bridesmaids! Never underestimate the planning, primping, pruning, tanning, prepping and more planning that goes into a wedding...and the amount of wine and champagne it takes to help you through it. Here's the bride to be (in heart shaped glasses) with her ladies in waiting at her "Chants & The City" themed bachelorette party :) Photos of the actual wedding will follow soon!

2. Sailing

Rum punch + catching up with old friends + big Bajan dinner = best sailing trip in a long time

3. The Beach

Enough said.

Happy New Year everyone!

I hope you all had a great time ringing in 2012 - I'd love to hear how everyone celebrated around the world!

Here's the first photo in my 'Personal Postcard' series, a challenge to myself to take a photo and post it on here every single day for a year.

no.1 - St.David's Church
